March 2010

Building work starts
Right now there are whopping great big holes in the floor of our new brewery site. Existing fittings have disappeared and the enormity of the hospitality/bar area has been revealed by some devastating sledgehammer skills. Armageddon has come to Dunsley Farm, paving the way for a beautiful oasis (of beer). It might smell of cow poo and cement dust now but if all goes to plan, by July it will smell of sweet boiling wort, spicy, floral hops and probably still a little bit of cow poo. Hey it's a farm.

Cask Ale Week - Help for Heroes, competition and a special beer
Last month we hinted at our plans for Cask Ale Week, being held from March 29th to April 5th, and here they are. Firstly and most importantly we will be producing a limited run brew called Salute. This will be distributed to a number of pubs, a list of which will be published online within the next two weeks. This list is important as whomever can supply us with photographic evidence of "Salute consuming" visits to as many of these participating pubs as possible wins. The prize is "Beer for a Year", which actually equates to 108 pints or a 9 pint tin per month (or any other combination of quantities if you fancy!). In the event of a draw, we will select a name randomly from a hat - or more likely a used carrier bag.

Now for the important bit. For every firkin of Salute sold, we will donate £5.00 to the Help for Heroes charity. In addition all participating pubs will have a Help for Heroes collection box on the bar. If you can spare some change it will go to a very worthy cause. A link to online donations will be set up and accessed via our website. For more about the Help for Heroes charity click HERE

Kenya, my unofficial second home
At the end of February my wife (Kate) and I (Ben), were fortunate to return to Kenya for a week at the superb Mara Bushtops campsite. Now when I say campsite, this is not your chemical loo, bent tent pegs and soggy sleeping bag setup. Nope this is 5 star luxury. I won't harp on about how excellent it was as you might one day find out for yourself. How? Read on.

The Mara Bushtops site is located on a hillside about 20 minutes drive from the main Mara game park. With it's own natural spring and solar powered heating and lighting, the site is virtually self sufficient. They even grow their own veg. Like other camps it has it's own conservancy, an area where wild animals roam but also where, during times of drought, the local Masai tribes can bring their livestock to graze. This tie in with the local communities extends to the development of facilities at the local Nkoilale School. Right now the camp is involved in a project to raise $26K to pay for the installation of a borehole, providing a much needed local source of clean readily available water. Later this year I will be embarking on a charity bike ride to raise money for this project however for now I would invite you to head over to the Nkoilale Schools project page HERE. A small donation will enter you into a draw to stay at Mara Bushtops but more importantly assist in bringing about a very positive change to the lives of many. Thank you.

Monthly Special - March
It appears that winter may finally be giving way to the crisp bright weather that characterises early spring here in the UK. But while the sun casts it's first warming rays of the year it is still a little too chilly to hit the beer gardens. That said, if you do, why not head outdoors with a pint of Duckett's Delight. This is a fine wholesome, copper coloured ale with pronounced but pleasant bitterness.
As with all our monthly specials, it is available for a limited period only. Click here to for more information on all Tring Brewery's 2010 monthly specials.
