Bratwurst with Ale and Red Onion

If you cannot get hold of Bratwurst you can use a good quality hot dog, however most supermarkets do stock them. To get the full rich flavour of the beer you need to use something with a bit of colour. I have used Death or Glory ale which is perfect for the job.

INGREDIENTS (serves 4)

8 Bratwurst sausages
2 medium red onions, sliced thinly.
1 garlic clove
1 bottle Death or Glory (or similar)
25 g butter
Dash of Worcester sauce
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Heat the butter in a frying pan then add the Bratwurst and brown all over which will take approximately 10 mins. Remove the sausages and put to one side before adding the sliced red onion and garlic to the frying pan. Gently cook the onions for 10 minutes until they become soft.

Add back the sausages to the pan and pour over the beer. Splash a few drops of Worcester sauce into the pan and season with a little salt and a generous amount of black pepper. Turn up the heat and reduce the beer down till it becomes syrup-like and coats the sausages. This is wonderful served with some warm bread or some buttery mashed potato.
